Shopping for highchairs: the easy guide
Babies can’t stay babies forever, sadly (or thankfully, depending on how much sleep you had last night!) and, as they grow older, a good and sturdy highchair will become an absolute must-have. Highchairs are, as you probably already know, the last word in baby dining furniture – but, with so many types available, how do you know which highchair is best suited to you, your baby and your home? With our handy highchair shopping guide, that’s how!
Is the highchair comfortable?
Firstly, is the highchair comfortable? There’s absolutely no point popping your baby in an uncomfortable highchair because, as ‘m sure you’ve discovered, they’ll express their discontent in the only way they know how – wailing for all to hear! Look out for seat padding, sharp edges – common on wooden options – and a footrest, not to mention plenty of room for growth. After all, your child will be spending a great deal of time sitting in their highchair – may as well make it a comfy seat!
Is the highchair easy to clean?
Babies make a mess. We know this – that’s how they earned the nickname “little mess makers”. Make life easier on yourself by bagging a highchair that’s easy to clean; most plastic highchairs offer wipe-clean trays, but keep an eye out for hidden crevices too – nobody wants to be digging out day-old food, do they? Some highchairs even allow you to take the entire tray out which makes cleaning a helluva lot easier!
Is the highchair adjustable?
An adjustable highchair is always a covetable highchair. Look for reclining seats, adjustable footrests, removable trays and different seat heights – the latest especially if you want to let your baby sit at the table with all of the adults!
Is the highchair portable?
Highchairs aren’t just for eating! Savvy parents can use the highchair all around the house to keep baby safe while they go about their duties – but only if it’s portable! Does it have lockable wheels? Can the highchair be dragged? Can you move the highchair easily with the baby inside it? And, if you want to take the highchair out to dinner with you or over to a friend’s house, make sure the highchair folds away easily too. Phew!
